Welcome to the 2nd installment of Hard% Hitting Waiver Wire. For week 3 adds we shift our focus to 2017 Hard%. The hitters listed have a minimum of 20 (warning: small sample size) plate appearances (PA) this season. See pic for Hard% context.
James McCann (C-DET) – 2017 Hard%: 52.6%, 18th
Ownership: 12% Yahoo, 10% ESPN. Addict’s advice: Take a catcher with your last pick and he’s doing last pick things? Draft Posey or Sanchez? Well, if you did then you might want to consider adding James McCann ASAP. In just 24 PA he’s already mashed 3 HRs. Now, I realize that is a small sample size. However, he did hit 12 HRs in only 373 PA last season. So, I think the power is legit relative to his position. Add him in 12/14-team leagues.
Robbie Grossman (OF-MIN) –2017 Hard%: 69.2%, 2nd
Ownership: 1% Yahoo, 1% ESPN. Addict’s advice: Ok, I know Grossman’s 69.2% hard hit rate isn’t sustainable. Had to get that out of the way. Oh, and he plays for the Twins, which isn’t ideal. What I like is that he hits 2nd in their lineup and most “experts” agree that the 2-hole is the most conducive to fantasy success. Couple that with his 2016 slash line of .280/.386/.443 with 11 HR in 389 PA and suddenly he becomes more palpable. As I write this, he just hit his 1st HR of the season. So, there’s that I guess. Add him in 15-team leagues and cross your fingers.
Jesus Aguilar (1B-MIL) – 2017 Hard%: 38.5%, 72nd
Ownership: 3% Yahoo, 3% ESPN. Addict’s advice: Aguilar is set to get the bulk of his playing time vs. left-handed pitching, which makes him a speculative pick at best. Though, he did hit 30 HR for the Indians (AAA) last year, so he does have some intriguing power. He’s off to a nice start (.400 avg.) for the Brew Crew thus far and that could portend to him getting PA more regularly. If so, then he could provide your team some pop whilst playing in Miller Park (#2 in MLB Park Factors). Add him in the deepest of leagues.
